Detroit gambler suing local casino, wants over $600K in losses returned immediately
Sep 21, 2009
A 61 year old engineer and long-time gambler in Detroit, Michigan (USA) is taking a local casino to court. Apparently, the man has lost a grand total of $673,854 while gambling at this casino over the years – and he wants it all back.
The gambler, Italo Mario Parise, is trying to build a case around a sort of loophole in Michigan state law. An old state statute called “gaming: action by loser” is the focus of the case. Parise insists that the casino he gambled at should have done something to stop him from losing so much money, especially after he filed for bankruptcy back in 1996. Parise says casino officials knew about his financial troubles, but did nothing to stop him from losing more money.
The idea of a land-based casino submitting to such a demand seems unlikely, but the courts might just rule in favor of Parise. The outcome of this case is uncertain, but things could get very interesting if the courts decide that the casino must return his losses.
