Indiana state governor supports convicted blackjack card counter

May 26, 2010

In what may have been one of the oddest commencement addresses ever given by a politician, Indiana governor Mitch Daniels recently touted a man convicted of blackjack card counting as an example to the graduating students of Franklin College.

Daniels said that admitted card counter Thomas P. Donovan was an example of hard work and fighting back against the odds. “We can’t take all the luck out of the game of life,” stated the governor, “but through wise choices, we can shift the odds in our direction.”

Donovan is currently involved in an Indiana Supreme Court case against the Grand Victoria Casino Resort. Grand Victoria had won a court order to ban Donovan from their casino, a ban that was overturned in a state appeals court.

The governor later stated that he wouldn’t pressure the Indiana gaming commission to introduce legislation on the practice of card counting, but Daniels did say that he “wouldn’t discourage the commission” from “examining card counting.”

Card counting in standard online blackjack is impossible, as the shoe is typically reshuffled after every hand. Live-dealer games still play with a finite number of decks in the shoe, typically eight as in Las Vegas.
