Are there changes on the horizon for US gambling laws?

Jan 21, 2009

Yesterday, Barack Obama was sworn into office as President of the United States. While many Americans spent the evening celebrating, Obama started working immediately. One of the first things he did was to halt all pending regulations that Bush tried to push through during his last days in office.

But the big question on all our minds is about the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act of 2006, which makes internet gambling in the US difficult. Some members of the current administration, like Representative Barney Frank, have already been pushing to overturn the law. Will Obama follow suit?

Nobody is sure yet, but there are many experts who believe it will happen. Considering the current economic situation in the US, many believe that regulation and taxation of internet gambling could give the economy a significant boost.

Other recent news from the US involves the now-famous case in Kentucky regarding domain name takeovers of many internet casinos – courts recently ruled in favour of the casinos, saying that Kentucky did not have the right to seize their website domains.

At this point it’s all speculation, but there are good reasons to believe that big change is in order for the US gambling industry. Players and casino owners are hopeful – being able to play online blackjack freely could provide an extra source of income in these difficult times! In the meanwhile, US players can play blackjack at these online casinos.
