The global fast food chain called Kentucky Fried Chicken, or just KFC for short, has a new limited-time “sandwich” for sale called the Double Down. Calling it a sandwich is a bit of a stretch, because this heart-stopping menu item has no bread – it uses fillets of fried chicken instead. In the middle, diners will find two slices of bacon, a bit of cheese, and a dollop of secret sauce.

“Double Down” is a term that should be familiar to anyone who understands the basic rules of blackjack. The term refers to a situation where a player has been dealt two cards, and they decide to wager double their original bet and receive only one more card on top of it. Doubling Down is a way for players to win more money on a hand that they are confident they will win.

KFC’s Double Down bunless chicken sandwich is attracting a lot of attention. Just days after its launch, CNN sent a reporter out to do a public taste test. PETA made an entire blog post about the evils the meal and its lack of nutritional value, comparing the Double Down to Russian Roulette (it has 124% of the recommended daily allowance of fat, and even more salt by weight). Of all the haters, the Treehugger blog seems to dislike it the most, calling it “the vilest food product created by man”.

When playing blackjack games, doubling down is a good thing. Is KFC’s Double Down bunless chicken sandwich a good thing? That’s up to you to decide.
