The government of Fiji is interested in building the island nation’s first ever casino.

A search is going on right now for developers who might consider in getting involved. A deadline has been set for the end of November for interested parties to ring in.

The announcement came a few weeks ago, and was made by Tourism and Trade Minister Aiyaz Sayed Khaiyum. The Minister said that the short deadline represents the government’s hopes of getting a fast response from potential international developers. The government is eager to move on to the next phase of the project, which is to assess the history and potential of all interested developers before making a final decision.

It is not yet clear what type of casino games the new gambling center would offer – it may end up just being a slots parlor, but it could also become a full-blown casino, offering things like poker, roulette, and blackjack card games.

There has already been some outcry against the proposal, Fiji’s National Council of Women has been particularly vocal, drawing connections between gambling and the sex trade and expressing concerns that a new blackjack casino may exacerbate existing problems with the exploitation of women and children.

The Fijian government, in return, has provided its reassurance that the social impact of the new casino would be countered with strict new gambling laws designed to protect the local community.
