Benjamin Metcalfe, 26, managed a Nando’s restaurant in Edinburgh. After the managing director of the restaurant chain noticed that the Edinburgh branch was missing around £10,000, it was discovered that Metcalfe had been pinching from the tills, apparently to fuel his gambling habit. He had been stealing the equivalent of a weeks’ salary every night when cashing up.

When confronted by police, Metcalfe begged the officers to let him visit the Circus Casino next door to the restaurant so that he could play blackjack and try to win the money back. Police denied his request, and arrested him on the spot.

Though the arrest took place next month, the trial only finished on Thursday. The judge told him that he deserves a prison sentence, but instead sentenced Metcalfe to 180 hours of community service. He must also repay all the money he stole from Nando’s.

Blackjack, when enjoyed responsible, can be very rewarding. Online blackjack casinos put the player in charge, and often have measures in place that let players set their own daily limits to control how much they spend.
