Sonic is coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch, and he’s bringing with him some colorful casino action.

Sonic fans are getting excited about the upcoming iPhone release of the latest game in the popular series of action platformers featuring everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog. It’s called Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1, and reports surfacing on the web have revealed that the game will include a unique act in a zone called Casino Street, where players can engage in some Sonic-style mobile casino action.

Casino zones are not new to the Sonic universe. They appear in just about every Sonic game that has been released. “Every single one of our traditional Sonic games on the Genesis, whether it be Sonic 1, 2, or 3, we’ve always had sort of a casino level,” says Sega’s brand manager for Sonic 4, Ken Balough.

These Casino zones are themed after classic casino games, using things like playing cards and slot machines making up parts of the scenery. In Sonic 4, these casino bits will all be interactive, forming mini-games that players can enjoy along the way. Playing cards flip as Sonic screams by, offering prizes when three of the same card lines up. The slot machines work too, paying out rings or extra lives.

Of course, these Sonic casino games will never pay out real money. For this, players (who are of legal age, of course) will need to visit a proper iPhone casino or iPad casino.

Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 will be released in late 2010 for PS3, Wii, Xbox 360 and iPhone/iPod Touch.
