Rise in Calls to Gambling Helpline Attributed to Rise in Mobile Gambling

UK experts believe that mobile casinos could be at the root of a rise in calls to the gambling problem helpline Gamcare, last year. Although the total figure stayed the same – or close to – as last year, the number of calls made by the 18-35 year old age group rose 6% to 5,552: a staggering 63% of all calls made.

Experts are blaming this on the rise in mobile sportsbooks and casinos, with the launch of several new mobile services over the past year. The Remote Gambling Association may suggest that it has stringent checks in place to protect problem gamblers, but according to some, this is not enough.

One potential positive note that isn’t being discussed is the potential that the increase could be attributable to more individuals with mobile sports betting problems actually seeking help, rather than an increase in the absolute figure. With the last national survey of the gambling commission only taking place back in 2010, there are no true figures on gambling addiction in the country, only conjecture.

The report isn’t likely to cause many sleepless nights for casino bosses, however, as the mobile market in the UK continues to grow apace. With major new players and old alike releasing apps on a regular basis, the market sees no sign of slowing down in the near future at least.
