Sony Ericsson has yet to confirm or deny the existence of the elusive Playstation Phone, but new videos popping up on YouTube make it pretty clear that the device is real.

The videos show a prototype that looks a lot like the PSP Go, with gaming controls that slide out from underneath the large touch screen. The video doesn’t show the device running any games, but it does reveal one very exciting fact: the PlayStation Phone will run on Android OS.

This brings up a very important question about this new phone, officially called the Sony Ericsson Zeus Z1: will it run PSP games, or will Sony publish an entirely separate library of games through the Android Market? Sony gave up on the UMD system with the PSP Go, and offers downloadable content via the PlayStation Store as the only method of game distribution for the device. The PlayStation Phone may use the same system, but this could impact PSP 2 sales. It seems more likely that Sony will instead develop Android games for the device.

Either way, if the Zeus Z1 runs on Android OS, this means users will have access to a full range of Android games. This includes all content available for download through the Android Market, as well as real money gambling games provided by Android casinos.

The PSP Phone combines mobile gaming with mobile gambling in unique ways. As an Android powered smartphone it offers tremendous flexibility in terms of games and apps, but it also promises to give players access to classic PlayStation titles, making it a strong competitor to the upcoming Nintendo 3DS as a top handheld console device. The upcoming release of the Sony Zeus Z1 will definitely be a big event for the worlds of mobile gaming and mobile phone gambling.
