Betsson closes shop on Gotgatan and switches to mobile sports betting

The legendary Gotgatan betting shop in Stockholm is closing down. Opened in May 2008, Betsson’s business was the favorite meeting place of the most passionate sports gamblers. CEO Magnus Silfverberg is convinced that the betting shop has lived up to its full potential and is set on investing all the company’s energy into developing mobile sports betting products.

Mobile sportsbooks are becoming more and more popular, so moving all business to a virtual platform might not be a bad idea, though it is sure to disappoint some of the customers that thought of the betting shop on Gotgatan as a second home.

“Our customers now have their betting shop at home. As we have reached our goals with the physical shop we now choose to put full focus on our mobile products, which have made astonishing progress this year”, Silfverberg said. When they first opened shop, the owners made it their goal to offer Swedish customers freedom of choice in gambling and were thus forced to come up with smart strategies to keep the shop from closing.

Online and mobile casino gambling has indeed proven to be a very profitable business and Betsson’s mobile efforts have already started to pay off. A new mobile site was set up earlier this year and the company even managed to launch one of the first native mobile gambling apps on the Nordic market.

The shop has officially closed as of December 12th. “Everything that you can do in a betting shop, you can now do from a desktop, tablet or mobile. Our future is mobile, like our players”, Silfverberg said.
