Sony Ericsson Xperia Play: Transformer of Android Gambling

Those who watched the Super Bowl have already seen Sony Ericsson’s creepy new commercial for the Xperia Play, transformer of Android casinos.

The Xperia Play, until recently known as the “PlayStation phone”, is an Android 2.3 powered smartphone with a full PlaysStation style controller and a big 4-inch touchscreen display.

While the device is being released with the Xperia Play brand and does not seem to include a PlayStation trademark, the Xperia Play is in fact PlayStation Certified and therefore should be entirely compatible with most PlayStation Suite PS1 games, in addition to Android games.

Of course, BlackjackChamp is most curious to see what new games Android casinos may create to take advantage of the unique controller, which is the most noteworthy feature of the Xperia Play. This is a controller PlayStation owners and PlayStation fans will find immediately familiar. Like the PlayStation Portable (PSP) Go, the Xperia is completed with square, circle, triangle, and X buttons. One could imagine a player wagering against a gambling operator upon whether they can successfully collect treasures, defeat tough monsters, pass levels, and complete missions in a game like Final Fantasy.

Rumours that a PSP phone would combined mobile gaming with mobile gambling have been circulating for several months now. While Sony previously refused to confirm the PHP phone even existed, their marketing department finally used a creepy and shocking commercial (see below) during a break in the Super Bowl XLV to expose the phone to American spectators and the world.

The Xperia Play will be officially launched on February 13th at 18:00 GMT, just in time for the most resourceful last minute shoppers to give their loved ones as a Valentine’s gift. Both Vodafone and O2 are already promising to make the Xperia Play available for their customers.

The Ericsson Xperia Play Smartphone with Android 3 was unveiled in Spain on February 13, 2011.
