These are the five biggest myths about the game of Blackjack that people fall for. Nobody is immune to these widespread beliefs – both new players and veterans alike can get caught up in these ideas. The reason for this is that they seem right, and are easy to believe.

These myths are a huge problem, because the more you believe in these myths, the more likely you are to lose – and lose big. Keep reading this page until you stop believing these myths, and you’ll be a better player for it!

5. Blackjack is foolproof way to win money.

Many players who are new to Blackjack hear the buzz about the game, or they hear about the huge prizes people have won playing it, and they get excited. They hear that it’s the best way to “beat the system”, or that it’s the only game that gives the player “the edge” over the house.

But here’s the cold, hard truth – the house always has the edge, no matter what game is being played.

It is true, however, that Blackjack gives some of the best odds available. Good players who know the right strategies for the game can, in the long run, come out ahead. But if you think Blackjack is a quick and easy way to win lots of money, think again.

4. Blackjack is only worth playing if you’re good at counting cards.

First of all, counting cards can and will give you better odds when playing Blackjack at a land-based casino. But it only works over a very long period of time – hundreds of hands – and it’s very frowned upon by the pit bosses, who will be very upset if they find out!

With internet Blackjack, however, it’s basically impossible to count cards. Why? Because most online Blackjack games start with a fresh deck every single hand! There are a few games that work different, and counting might benefit you then, but for most online games, it simply doesn’t work.

Instead, learn basic strategies, like the ones you find here on our site. These can be used by anyone at all. It definitely does not take a photographic memory to win at Blackjack!

3. Always take Insurance.

Insurance is a little side you can take with the dealer is showing an Ace – you are betting that the dealer has a 10 in the hole. The bet is equal to half your original bet, and it pays 2:1 if the dealer has Blackjack. If you win the bet, you break even, but if not, you lose the bet and keep playing.

This seems like a good deal, but overall, it’s not worth the money. The odds are very strongly with the House, anywhere from 2% to 15% depending on how many decks are in play. Without going into all the mathematical details, Insurance bets will only lose you more money in the long run.

Unless you are in a game that allows card counting and you’ve been closely following the game and know the odds of getting a Blackjack, definitely skip on the Insurance bet.
