Olympic Scandals Grow and Cheating Continues

Every Olympics has its dose of scandals. More or less, London got its share.

Before, we mentioned in the London Summer Olympics news about the issues revolving around empty seats, which were originally allocated to VIPs on an excessive basis.

Now, there is a scandal involving athletes. Eight badminton players, including top ranked Chinese athletes, were disqualified from London 2012 Summer Olympics after playing to…lose. Yes, sometimes in sports it is better to lose a game in order to get an easier opponent in the next round.

What is totally unacceptable is the farce the top Olympians showcase in front of millions of spectators. The way they played made it obvious they played to lose. Even children play better badminton. The Olympic Committee made a right decision to disqualify them.

Meanwhile, an athlete was disqualified for doping. Not everyone will get caught as there are random tests among over 10,000 athletes participating. However, every medal winner will get tested. So why would an athlete use performance-increasing substances if she or he knows they can’t win a medal after taking these?

One reason is that by finishing high, such as in the top 10, many athletes will get continued sponsorship and scholarships to carry them for the next four years.

When it comes to Olympic sports betting, we haven’t heard of any fixed games yet. But, make no mistake, lots of events in sports are fixed so organized gangs can make money off bets. If a game is fixed, though, it is done in more subtle way than that of badminton players performance.
